Arizona Fall League Opener is Tuesday

While checking out twitter yesterday before the afternoon smorgasbord of football/baseball/poker, I saw this tweet from Jim at Bernie’s Crew.

Interesting to see 1B Hunter Morris on Arizona Fall League roster. #Brewers must really like him – or r pushing his bat w/ Fielder out soon.

I had heard that Morrris was scheduled to head to instructional league, but nothing about being added to the AFL roster. This is good news.

Morris – along with Jeremy Jeffress (’10), Mike Fiers (’09), and Dan Merklinger – will play for the Surprise Rafters this falls.  Their first game is tomorrow against the Peoria Javelinas at 2:35pm CDT.

As an added bonus, Jeffress, Fiers, Merklinger, and the rest of the pitchers for the Rafters get to the wit, wisdom, and music of former Timber Rattlers pitching coach Brad Holman.

Should be an interesting couple of months.

Bernie’s Crew also Tweeted yesterday that is was basically Lawrie’s decision to not play in the AFL this year.

They give the impression that Lawrie has been pretty much calling his own shots since being drafted.

Are you able to share your opinion on Lawrie? If not for injury, his glove (if he’s to remain at 2B) sorely needs those additional 32 games doesn’t it?

On the glass half full side, nice to see Hunter get some more AB’s. Bernie’s Crew also noted they’d heard he was going to get some time at 3B, although I didn’t see him in the box score at all for the first game yesterday.

Or, you could look at it as he has been playing nonstop since signing after the ’08 draft and he needed the break.

Take into account playing for Canada in the Olympics (’08) and the World Cup (’09).

Plus, I don’t think that Brett Lawrie is just going to go home and eat Tim Horton’s every day during the offseason.
