Postgame thoughts (June 11, 2011)

TinCaps 8, Rattlers 2
Boxscore | Game Story

  • Well…now it is a three-way tie for third in the Western Division.
  • Plus, Quad Cities lost tonight.
  • You absolutely correct and up-to-date Western Division Wild Card Standings
    QC   34-28 –
    WIS 32-30 2.0
    BEL 32-30 2.0
    PEO 32-30 2.0
  • The Rattlers, the Snappers, and the Chiefs have eight games left.  Quad Cities has seven games left.
    Rattlers: 1 v. FW; 4 @PEO, 3 @CR
    Snappers: 1 v. LC; 4 v. CR; 3 @BUR
    Chiefs:  1 v. SB, 4 v. WIS; 3 @QC
    Bandits: 1 v. GL; 3@CLN; 3 v. PEO
  • The game.
  • Cody Hawn needs one of these:

    Best. Episode. Ever.

  • Hawn may start getting some hits AND win an awesome pair of parachute pants.
  • This is why he needs one of those things.  Hawn scalded two baseballs tonight that turned into three outs. One in the first was liner headed to the corner in left. But, the Fort Wayne 3B made a leaping grab for the last out. The second in the sixth made me sick to my stomach.  Here is how I wrote it up in the game story:
Nick Shaw singled to start Wisconsin’s half of the sixth. He was running on a pitch to Cody Hawn. Hawn drove the pitch to left field and it looked like extra bases. But, left fielder Luis Domoromo raced back and made a leaping catch on the warning track with his back to the infield. Shaw was halfway to third base when the ball was caught. He was easily doubled off first base.
  • I just talked about that play again with Jay, the official scorer. Neither of us can figure out how in the HELL Domoromo made that play.
  • So, please check The Breakfast Club Soundtrack album in your Ronco Record Vault and send the contents to Cody Hawn care of Time Warner Cable Field.
  • I know I probably read too many Dr. Strange comics growing up because I keep thinking of THIS GUY when I have to say Domoromo.
  • I also must have been paying attention when we studied Richard III, because Fort Wayne’s catcher is Cole Tyrell.  I wonder if he ever picked up the nickname gentle Tyrell in his life.
  • Circling back around to the first show referenced tonight, Andrew Werner was the starting pitcher tonight. He struck out eight in seven innings.  After each of them, I wished his name was Wernstrom so that I could say, “WERNSTROM!
  • I don’t know if you have been following this in the game notes for the last few days…BUT, Mike Walker drew two walks on Saturday.  Nick Shaw drew none.  Walker leads the team in walks with 39. Shaw is second with 37.
  • Speaking of Shaw: He had three more hits to move his batting average to .260.  Before the game on May 3, Shaw was hitting .119.
  • Greg Hopkins is now on an 11 game hitting streak (19-for-46).
  • The Timber Rattlers have committed nine errors in the last two games.
  • That was a downer. Can’t let it end there.
  • Here’s a few pictures from “Star Wars” Night

Postgame Thoughts (June 10, 2011)

TinCaps 11, Rattlers 5
Boxscore | Game Story

  • I do not have a lot to add tonight. The following passage from the game story tells the, um, story.

It was bad news all around the Midwest League scoreboard for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities, the leaders in the Western Division Wild Card race, destroyed Great Lakes 20-2. Peoria beat South Bend 6-3 and Beloit edged Lake County 3-2 in ten innings.

Wisconsin (32-29) has dropped into a three-way tie for third place remains in third place in the Western Division with Peoria (31-30) and Beloit (31-30) one game behind the Rattlers. All three teams Wisconsin trails Quad Cities (34-27) by two games in the chase for the Wild Card.*

  • Not impossible to make up two games over the final nine games.  But it sure as heck isn’t easy.
  • Brooks Hall topped out at 94 and was sitting 91-92.
  • But, this is the hardest he has been hit since joining the Rattlers.
  • Greg Hopkins.
  • Elaboration on Hopkins: 10-game hitting streak. In six games since going into the cleanup spot, Hopkins is 11-for-26 with nine RBI.
  • Five errors tonight.
  • Fort Wayne went through six pitchers tonight.
  • How about a couple of whimsical photos to close this post out.
  • *-I have been making way too many mistakes.

What the heck?

Rattlers 5, Captains 4
Boxscore | Game Story

  • Well, what do you want to hear about first? Thornbug? You want to hear about Thornburg first, right?
  • 7IP, 2R, 4H, BB, 10K. Unofficially 98 pitches (68 strikes)
  • Plus – after the two 2-out hits in the second inning – he went into shutdown mode.
  • No really.  What else would you call retiring the final 16 batters he faced? Shutdown mode sounds good to me.
  • He was really throwing a lot of changeups tonight.  Good ones, too. Had the Captains off balance all night.
  • Not sure if that was because he was sick the last couple of days or not, but he was working it well on Thursday.
  • One other note on Thornburg.  In the seventh inning, as he neared the end, Thornburg let loose on an 0-2 pitch to either Jesus Aguilar or Alex Lavisky.  He hit 95mph.
  • Greg Hopkins is on a 9-game hitting streak he is 15-for-37 (.405).
  • Over the five games since moving into the #4 spot, Hopkins is 9-for-21 (.429) and has seven RBI.
  • That RBI double gave the Rattlers a 5-2 lead. Turns out they needed it.
  • Greg Holle came on in the eighth with the bases loaded and a run already in to cut the Rattlers lead to 5-3.  He got a weak grounder to third to end the inning.
  • In the ninth…first two batters reach. Sac bunt, RBI grounder to make it 5-4. Walk. Runners at the corners. Two outs.
  • The count on the final batter did not go to 3-2.  Holle got another weak grounder to third and the game ended.
  • Holle is 13-for-13 in save opportunities.
  • Quad Cities lost 2-0 to Lansing.  So, the Rattlers are one game back of the River Bandits in the Wild Card Chase.
  • Wisconsin has 10 games left in the half: 3 v. Fort Wayne; 4 @Peoria; 3 @Cedar Rapids
  • Quad Cities has 9 games left in the half: 3 v. Great Lakes; 3 @Clinton; 3 v. Peoria
  • Records of Rattlers opponents: FW: 26-33; PEO: 30-30; CR: 28-32
  • Records of Bandits opponents: GL: 33-27; CLN: 21-40; PEO: 30-30
  • Quad Cities had a game with Kane County rained out on May 25. It was not made up.
  • I’m not sure when the highlights for tonight’s game will be ready.  Our video people were both starstruck by Mr. Belding and in charge of getting him where he needed to be tonight. They are a little late getting the video posted.
  • Which is fine when you consider I was late getting this post up.  Just head over to the TimberRattlerTV YouTube channel later on tonight and enjoy.

Postgame thoughts (June 8, 2011)

Rattlers 14, Captains 2
Boxscore | Game Story

  • I doubt that there is anything that I could add to those video highlights–especially after 14 hours of sleep…yes, I was tired.
  • Okay, a couple of things.  Yes. That was a knuckleball that Captains starting pitcher Steven Wright was tossing up there.
  • TJ Mittelstaedt, the Rattlers own knuckleball tossing pitcher, drew a walk to start the carnage in the bottom of the first
  • Four homers in a game – first time for the Rattlers since July 3, 2010 at Burlington
  • 20 hits in a game – first time for the Rattlers since August 5, 2007 at Fort Wayne
  • The reason for the TBA today instead of Tyler Thornburg is that Thornburg was sent home sick from the stadium each of the last two days.  He may not make the start today…Might be Dan Britt…Don’t know yet.
  • Jameson Dunn’s scoreless streak ended at 18-2/3 innings when he gave up a home run to LeVon Washington in the 5th.
  • A quick did you know: Did You Know: Dunn and Brooks Hall are a combined 4-0 with a 2.42ERA since joining the Timber Rattlers?
  • Do we need to start calling them Brooks & Dunn?  Maybe not.
  • Thanks a lot, Lansing:

[Cody] Stanley cracked the game-tying, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the sixth, and Victor Sanchez knocked him in one pitch later to rally Quad-Cities to a 4-3 win over Lansing at Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday.

  • Again. Thanks a lot for holding that 3-0 lead.
  • Well, Peoria lost. Rattlers are in third all by themselves.  Still trail Quad Cities by two games for the Wild Card.  Rattlers have 11 games left in the half.

Postgame thoughts (June 7, 2011)

A few highlights:

Captains 9, Rattlers 0
Boxscore | Game Story

  • Got to keep this one short. Early day tomorrow…again.
  • Jimmy Nelson had two out and none on in the fifth inning with the Rattlers down 1-0.  A .193 hitter singled.  A .176 hitter drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch.  Another walk loaded the bases.  He still had a chance to get out of the inning when facing Ronny Rodriguez with an 0-2 count.  An off-speed pitch was down, but not down enough. Rodriguez singled to left and drove in two runs.
  • You know what I hate?  I mean besides all those other things.  At the top of the list tonight is:  Getting messages from MiLB.com asking me to have an opposing starter get in touch with them for a story.  Tonight was the third time it’s happened because they wanted to talk to Mike Goodnight. Go read it. I don’t want to read it.
  • Also happening tonight for the third time?  The Rattlers have had three scheduled off days this season.  April 24, May 16, and June 6.  Each of those scheduled off days have been followed by home games for the Rattlers.  Follow this:
  • April 24: Off Day; April 25: 5-0 loss to Quad Cities
  • May 16: Off Day; May 17: 7-0 loss to Beloit
  • June 6: Off Day; June 7: 9-0 loss to Lake County
  • That’s weird.  Damn weird.
  • All you need to know about the playoff race: Burlington won; Quad Cities won; Peoria lost. Rattlers tied with Peoria two games behind Quad Cities for the Wild Card and 9-1/2 games behind Burlington. Rattlers have 12 games left.
  • Jameson Dunn on the hill Wednesday.
  • Tyler Thornburg has been bumped up to Thursday.
  • Get ’em tomorrow.
  • Oh, by the way. The tarp is now on the field.
