Lineup & Game Notes (July 10, 2011)

Gotta Dance!*

Sorry about the lack of a post on last night’s game.  My computer refused to connect to the hotel internet last night.

Most of my thoughts on last night’s game have been transferred to the Game Notes for today.  Click on that link below and read the left hand column of page one for those thoughts.

What did not make it into the game notes are:

  • Zach Russell turned into Kurt Russell last night. I wouldn’t necessarily say he was Snake Plissken from Escape from New York. Maybe Sgt. Todd from Soldier or Herb Brooks from Miracle. Definitely not Gabe Cash from Tango & Cash.
  • By going 0-for-2 with the bases loaded last night, Wisconsin is now 17-for-82 (.209) in the bases full this season.
  • Charly Bashara has not allowed a run in six of his last seven games.
  • Last night was the sixth time this season Bashara has tossed three or more innings in relief.

A couple of other notes for today:

Congratulations to Cody Scarpetta on his call up to the Brewers today.

Watch Tyler Thornburg in the Futures Game today at 5pm on ESPN2!

By the way, that photo is taken from the visiting radio booth…you know…the one with the window that doesn’t open.  Here is another shot of the practice for something:

Practice, practice, practice.

Lineup & Game Notes (July 9, 2011)

Before getting to the lineup & game notes some quick background.

There is a collector in the Quad Cities who has several uniforms signed by players who have been enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  He has donated many of them to the River Bandits.  These jerseys are decorations on the press box/suite level at Modern Woodmen Park.

I have taken pictures of two of those uniforms which happened to catch my eye.  As always, click for a larger image:

Hank Aaron - Braves. His signature only.

Pete Rose and everything he has ever done in baseball & his signature & "Charlie Hustle" & "Hit King" & #4,256

Apologies for the glare on the second photo. I couldn’t block out the light and a straight on photo with me in the reflection on the glass would have been…creepy.

Not as creepy as the fact that there were 500 of those #14 jerseys made, but still creepy…

To the pertinent information for today:

Postgame Thoughts (July 8, 2011)

Wiseguy: The greatest TV Show you've never heard of.

Kane County 6, Wisconsin 1
Boxscore | Game Story

  • Ever see Wiseguy? Great show, especially the first season.
  • There is a scene in the first episode in which Vinnie Terranova, an undercover federal agent, has just gained the confidence of Atlantic City mob boss Sony Steelgrave. Sonny, who was one of the most interesting characters on television in the 80’s, is explaining the facts about working for him to Vinnie: You mess up, you get dropped in a hole near the turnpike. Once a year we drive by and somebody says, ‘Hey, isn’t that the spot that we planted old Vinnie?’ You get what I’m talking about?
  • To paraphrase Sonny: I’d like to drop this game in a hole near 441. Once a year, I’ll drive by and say, ‘Hey, isn’t that the spot where we planted that game from July 8, 2011?’ You get what I’m talking about?
  • As long as it’s not like Goodfellas and I gotta go dig it up six months later.
  • Maverick Lasker looked frustrated in the fourth inning tonight.  There were several close pitches that were called balls. Then, with two out and none on in the inning, five straight Cougars reached base for three more runs.
  • There also appeared to be a bit of a discussion between Orlando Calixte and Lasker when the former was at second base and the latter had turned around to rub up the baseball.
  • The image that I most want to bury in a hole out on the turnpike is in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Hopkins sent a grouncer behind third.  Cheslor Cuthbert made a great play to make the stop, but I thought that Hopkins would beat the throw easily.  However – when I looked to first – Hopkins had rounded out into foul territory as if he was setting up to round first and go for second base.  By the time he was heading back to the bag, he was out by a couple of steps.
  • I am almost positive this will not happen again.
  • Adrian Rosario got in the game with two on and no outs in the fifth.  His first pitch was a wild pitch. His second pitch was a single that drove in two runs.  Kane County went up 6-0.
  • Mike Walker broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Walker broke up a shutout with a two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth inning at Kane County on May 27.
  • Cody Hawn now owns a 9-game hitting streak.
  • Kane County is 38-46 this season.  The Rattlers are 46-39 this season.  Wisconsin is 4-7 against Kane County this season.
  • Here is a head-scratcher for you: The Rattlers are 2-6 in eight games at Time Warner Cable Field in the second half.  They have been outscored 55-36 in those eight games.
  • Three-game series at Quad Cities starts Saturday.  Wisconsin swept a three game set in the QC May 1-3.
  • Get on the bus and get ’em tomorrow.

Postgame Thoughts (July 7, 2011)

Rattlers 11, Cougars 5
Boxscore | Game Story

  • The Rattlers LAUGH at four run deficits in the first inning.
  • Be honest. What did you think after the Cougars were up 3-0 with no outs and runners at the corners five batters into the game?
  • Me? I thought of this quote from Rocky III:
    Apollo Creed
: [during the rematch with Lang] He’s gettin’ killed out there!
Paulie: No, no, no! He ain’t gettin’ killed; he’s gettin’ mad!
  • Rewind to July 2. The first three runners reached base, two scored.  Miller gives up one run over the next three innings and the Rattlers came back to win the game.
  • July 7:  It’s 4-0 after the top of the first. Miller allows one hit over the next five innings.
  • However, let’s not make a habit of this.
  • Unofficially 93 pitches with 59 strikes over six innings.  30 of those pitches were in the top of the first.
  • Keep in mind that Miller threw 80 pitches in four innings back on July 2.
  • Offensively: My gosh.  Look at the highlights.
  • Paciorek’s homer was a laser and didn’t have time to go foul.
  • Mike Walker bumped his batting average to .294 with a 4-for-4 day.  Add in a walk for him as well #49 on the season.
  • Chad Stang is looking very comfortable out there now.  Three more hits today and an 8-game hitting streak.
  • Cody Hawn is on an 8-game hitting streak now, too.
  • Did you know…The Rattlers are 75-for-204 (.366) in their last five games.
  • Um, that is an average of 15 hits per game in the last five games.
  • That’s good? Right?
  • Congratulations to Chris Dennis on the promotion today.
  • Welcome back to the active roster Carlos George.
  • Handshakes all around!

A job well done!

Postgame thoughts (July 7, 2011)

Cougars 10, Rattlers 7
Boxscore | Game story

  • To answer the question, “I think so. At least since 2005”  The question?  “Is five homer allowed a record?”
  • I went back and looked after the game.  The most homers allowed in a game by the Rattlers since 2005 was four.
  • To give credit to the Cougars, none of them were cheap.
  • Jake Kuebler was hitting .196 with two homers in 37 games coming into Wednesday’s game.
  • He hit three home runs and got a call from the folks at MiLB.com.  I believe this is the third or fourth time that an opposing player has received a call from the folks in New York after a game in Time Warner Cable Field.
  • A goal for the rest of the season should be for that NOT to happen any more.
  • Del Howell’s Line was: 3.2IP, 7H, 6R, BB, 2K, 2 HR. Unofficially: 57 pitches (32 strikes)
  • Look at those highlights again…Did Mitch Hodge fall down on the Jason Rogers double in the sixth inning?
  • Walker hit the home run off the top half of the rotating panels.  Remember! he’s left-handed, folks!
  • Not on the highlights is the last out of the game.  I really thought that Jason Rogers was going to at least get that ball off the wall in left-center to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
  • But, Eibner made a great catch.
  • Dang it!
  • Cody Hawn & Chad Stang both extended their hitting streaks to seven games.
  • Greg Hopkins is now at a nine game hitting streak.
  • Missed opportunity of the night: Bases loaded, no outs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Rattlers down 6-1. No runs. Ouch.
  • Back to Mitch Hodge for a second.  He has appeared in three games against the Rattlers this season. His line v. the Rattlers: 8IP, 15H, HB, 6BB, 4K.  Of the 22 base runners Wisconsin has had against Hodge, how many have scored?
  • Answer: Five.
  • I would not have thought that was even possible?
  • 12:05pm game time tomorrow. Weather’s going to be great, Matt Miller is on the hill. Come on out.
  • Get ’em tomorrow.

Postgame Thoughts (July 5, 2011)

Members of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are interviewed after Tuesday's game in Beloit.

Rattlers 8, Snappers 3
Boxscore | Game Story

  • I feel old. I had to try to explain who the Road Warriors were to TJ Mittelstaedt before the game yesterday
  • If it leads to a 5-for-5 day with 3 RBI everyday, I should try to explain who The Fabulous Freebirds were to someone
  • Jimmy Nelson worked through some issues in the second inning and never looked back.
  • Eight strikeouts in seven innings.  Go, Bama! Roll, Tide!
  • Nelson’s last three starts: 21IP, 15H, 6R, 7BB, 19K.  Not eye-popping numbers, but much improved from early in the season.
  • The offense didn’t let Manuel Soliman get comfortable either.  It looked like he was going to be in for one of THOSE games against the Rattlers as he allowed one hit and struck out two in the first 2-1/3 innings.
  • Then, Chad Stang got things rolling with a double to right in the third.
  • Stang looks much more at ease at the plate than he did when he started with the Rattlers.  That’s good.
  • Current hitting streaks for the Rattlers:
    Greg Hopkins: 8 games (11-for-35)
    Cody Hawn: 6 games (10-for-24)
    TJ Mittelstaedt: 6 games (14-for-28)
    Chad Stang: 6 games (11-for-25)
  • By the way, this is the first time Hawn has made it to a six-game hitting streak this season. He’d made five four other times.
  • One other note on Mittelstaedt…Say hello to your Midwest League leader in Batting Average!
  • Great trip for the Rattlers. They were 5-1 and that sweep of Beloit at Pohlman Field was the first by the Rattlers since 2001.
  • Movie on the bus ride home last night was “The Road to Perdition”.
  • Nice movie, but I’m supposed to believe that Forrest Gump kills Cool Hand Luke AND James Bond.
  • Come on!
  • The first place Cougars are in town for three games starting tonight.
