  • By my count, the Rattlers won the doubleheader and the series on aggregate.
  • But, this isn’t CONCACAF Champions League
  • I wanted to touch on the third inning…the inning where the Rattlers lost two runners on the bases.
  • The tag on Romero was on the back of his shoulder.
  • Romero, Dusty Rhodes, and Matt Erickson all thought Romero was safely back.
  • I didn’t think it was even that close of a play.
  • But, I don’t have a call or a say.
  • The Brownstein play in the same inning was…was…just…odd
  • He took off on the first move by Perez and stopped because Perez stopped. Then, he took off when Perez threw to first.  THen, Kuebler dropped the throw…Then, the throw was high….Then, Brownstein was called out.
  • Again, I don’t have a call.
  • But, Brownstein looked like he was arguing that Perez had started to the plate, stopped, and then threw.
  • I am pretty sure that is a balk.
  • Again, I don’t have a call.
  • HOWEVER, plenty of other chances in game one, just unable to cash in.
  • Second and third in the second with one out; Bases loaded with one out in the fourth; First and Third with one out in the seventh
  • Dang.
  • Then, Game two…What a pick me up!
  • Garman 5IP, H, 0R, 2BB, 4K after 55 straight
  • Oh and the answer is May 14, 2010.
  • The question? When was Brian Garman’s last start?
  • If you read the Brian Garman profile in the Post-Crescent, this start should not have surprised you.  To Chris Hook’s analysis:

He had some hiccups early with us and since then he’s been making his way back to where he was last year. When you don’t have success right away, you tend to step back a little — sort of like a boxer. I think he’s come back. He’s had a few jabs in there and has made a comeback.

“His best attribute and tool is his tenacity. He has to have tenacity. He has to be a bulldog. When he loses that, he loses part of himself. That’s what we’re looking for out of him — the bulldog mentality.”

  • I’m not sure.  Is 60 pitches/41 strikes and retiring the last ten batters in order in your first pro start and pitching five innings when your previous high this season was 3-1/3 innings a “bulldog mentality”?
  • Pretty sure, but I may need to check with someone.
  • Maybe check with later tonight.  They called looking for some quotes from Garman.
  • Britt just picked up where Garman left off and pitched two perfect innings to close out the game
  • By my math, Garman & Britt retired the final 16 Cougars batters in the game.
  • The only Kane County hit in game two was a line single to left-center over the head of Shaw at short.
  • I’m an idiot. Mixed it up with one of the hits in the first game.
  • From the story:

Only his own hesitation stopped him from making a play on Kuebler’s tapper back up the middle.

“I wish I had been able to make that play,” the 23-year-old left-hander said. “He didn’t hit it very well, but I thought it was coming harder than it was. As a pitcher, it’s just self-preservation. I didn’t set my feet or get in front of it like I should have and I just stabbed at it. It was a pretty soft roller and it bounced off the end of my glove.

  • Speaking of Shaw, his 14 game hitting streak ended in game one, so he started a new one in the second game with a first inning single.
  • Brownstein with an excellent AB in the sixth inning of game two.  He was down 1-2 fouled off three pitches, didn’t chase a couple of off speed pitches and took them for balls to run the count full.  Then, he lined a double into the corner in left to drive in two runs for a 5-0 lead.
  • Alright.
  • So? Where does this split leave the Rattlers? There are 26 games left in the regular season. There are 13 at home and 13 on the road.
  • Well, The Rattlers, Peoria, and Cedar Rapids are all 18-26 and tied for fifth.
  • Wisconsin is eight games behind Kane County for the second half division title with three games left against the Cougars
  • Wisconsin is five games behind Clinton for the second half division wild card with 0 games left against the LumberKings
  • Beloit and Quad Cities are at Time Warner Cable Field for three games each starting Wednesday.
  • See you at the ballpark!
