August 29, 2012 Highlights

Beloit 6
Rattlers 5 (12 innings)
Boxscore | Game Story

Apologies for not posting this last night.  I stared at the blank screen again. Then, I remembered that I had to do an interview on a radio station at 7:20 this morning.

Just some quick morning after thoughts:
Chad Thompson had a 13 inning scoreless streak snapped with that 2-out run he allowed in the sixth inning.
Wang-Wei Lin is a wizard.  I can’t think of any other way that he could have possibly made the catch to rob Stang of a game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.
Rattlers pitchers issued leadoff walks in the 7th, 10th, & 12th.  Each of those leadoff walks scored.
Three of Beloit’s six runs scored on two out hits.
The teams combined (BEL: 4-for-21; WIS: 2-for-11) to hit 6-for-32 with RISP.
Beloit trails the Rattlers for the best overall record in the Western Division by 2-1/2 games with five to play.
In the Western Division Wild Card race, Burlington & Kane County both lost.  Burlington still has a three game lead over Kane County for the Second Half Wild Card.  Burlington is looking more and more likely to be the Rattlers first round opponent.

Postgame post for August 27, 2012

Wisconsin 3
Peoria 7
Boxscore | Game Story

The talk on the bus ride was about the ejection of Cameron Garfield.  This may come as a surprise to you, but I’m going to side with the Rattlers on this one.

I could go over the game, but I’m not sure what I can add to this one.  The game story has everything.

So, the five most annoying celebration songs I have heard in my broadcast career.

#5.) The Heat is On: Omaha Lancers (USHL)
A lifetime ago, I was the radio announcer for the Green Bay Gamblers.  The Omaha Lancers had a great offensive team and they would score lots and lots of goals.  The song that they played after every goal was the Glenn Frey “classic” from Beverly Hills Cop.  No seriously.  It would kick in right around the point in the song where Glenn sounded like he was singing backup vocals to his own song.  Then, at the appropriate moment – right after ‘It’s on the street!’, 6,000 Lancers fans would all sing along with that “Whoooo-hoooo”.  I hate that song and Beverly Hills Cop has been ruined for me.

#4.) Song #2: Winnipeg Goldeyes (Northern League of Professional Baseball)
It was 1998.  I was in my first year as the solo radio announcer for the Duluth Superior Dukes.  The Winnipeg Goldeyes still played in Winnipeg Stadium, a football stadium for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  The left field fence was 300′ from home plate.  They had the lot of power hitting right-handed hitters.  Not that you needed to be a slugger to hit one out of the park there.  There was one game, the last game of a series.  The Dukes bullpen was used up and the starter needed to go deep into the ballgame…no matter what. I don’s have my scorebook from the 1998 Dukes in front of me, but I am almost positive that the starter went all eight innings and gave up 500 runs and the Goldeyes hit 88 homers.  The Goldeyes production crew played this song – from the start – after every. single. run.

#3.) We like to Party: Peoria Chiefs (Midwest League)
I hated this song when Six Flags used it and their commercials were on every station at all hours of the day or night.  The Chiefs, to their credit, have added dancing ears of corn – named Norm & Al – to really ramp this one up to 11.

#2.) Chelsea Dagger: Beloit Snappers, Cedar Rapids Kernels, South Bend Silver Hawks (Midwest League)
I don’t know how and I don’t know why this song became popular with THREE teams in the league but I wanted the Rattlers to shutout these teams every time they played at the respective stadiums.

#1.) Iowa Fight Song: Cedar Rapids Kernels
The Rattlers played in Cedar Rapids on Iowa night this year. The Kernels played this song after every Kernels run.  Cedar Rapids scored FOURTEEN runs that night.

You made it through the crap. Now, Here is the song I would play – starting at about 2:41  where that kickin’ drum beat starts up – after a win…if people knew what real music was.

Yes, it’s odd that I put a song that has the lyrics:

Well, I can’t be bothered with sorrow
And I can’t be bothered with hate, no, no

in a post about songs that bother me and have grown to hate.

Don’t care.

Another game tomorrow.  Go get ‘em.

The Day in pictures:

Pregame

Sixth inning. Notice the lights.

This is in the ninth inning. The bases are loaded and there are two outs. You can see Rafael Neda waiting on deck as the grounds crew tries to get the mound and third base ready to resume play.

And this is roughly 15 minutes after the end of the game.

Final thoughts: Great job by the Chiefs front office and grounds crew in a difficult spot.  They held off the start of the game because of a weather system that could have dumped a lot of rain on the field a lot earlier than it did.  Nobody wanted to burn a starting pitcher and nobody wanted a doubleheader.  Also, I am about 92.4% positive that the umpires almost called for the tarp in the top of the ninth inning.  That would have been a mistake.

Right now, It’s raining all over the world:
