I try to never read too much into performances on the last day of the season…
Especially in a game that features a 6-5 double play with a runner at second and a grounder to short starts the play and a different play in which a pitcher does not cover home plate on a wild pitch that didn’t get too far away from the plate with a runner at third base resulting in a run scoring and that pitcher getting yanked from the game with a 2-2 count on the batter with two outs in the inning…
BUT, gol durnit, that was a fun way to spend about five hours on Labor Day.
Five home runs on the day with some timely hitting and good relief work.
Max Walla kept game two from getting out of hand with a spectacular diving catch. Read the game two game story for details.
Chad Thompson and Brent Suter do the job in game one. Eric Semmelhack, Santo Manzanillo, and Michael White do the job in game two. Bullpen should be fresh and ready to go on Wednesday in game one against the Bees.
By sweeping the three game series from the Bees at the end of the regular season, the Rattlers wound up with a winning record against the Bees (10-9) in 2012. The Rattlers did not have a losing record against any team from the Western Division. As the great Mel Allen might say, “How ’bout that?”
The team will work out in Burlington tomorrow morning and take the afternoon to relax. Next game is Wednesday at 6:30pm right back here at Community Field.
It’s been a long day and the plan is to put a detailed playoff preview up sometime tomorrow afternoon – or, once I know the starters for Burlington.
Until then, Rattlers fans, just roll with it:
