1994 Foxes Home Game #6 – May 1

A folder was found during the renovations of Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Inside this folder, an era of Appleton Professional Baseball was rediscovered. The original scoresheets and boxscores from home games of the first half of the 1994 Foxes season. This was the time of Alex Rodriguez, Raul Ibanez, and many other future major league ball players.

Rattler Radio will look back at each of these games from 1994 between now and Opening Day, 2013. Enjoy.

Franklin worked scoreless through the first three innings.  But, the Royals took the lead in the top of the fourth.  Franklin hit Sweeney with one out and an infield single by Vindivich put two runners on base.  Lino Diaz singled in Sweeney to tie the game and a fielder’s choice by Byington let Vindivich score for a 2-1 lead.

A-Rod came through with a hit in the fifth inning to put the Foxes back in front.  Appleton loaded the bases with no outs on the following plays: Clifford (HBP), Lawson (1B), & Sturdivant (1B).  Barger struck out for the first out.  Then, A-Rod singled to left to drive in two runs for to put the Foxes back up 3-2.

Appleton padded their lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Rick Burley.  Sutherland singled to start the inning and -with one out – moved to second on a grounder off the bat of Guevara.  Clifford singled to center to knock in Sutherland for the insurance run…that they would need.

Franklin pitched eight innings, scattered five hits, walked one, and struck out six before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Robert Krueger took over to start the top of the ninth and got Hickman to send a grounder to short.  BUT, Rodriguez threw wildly to let Hickman reach.  That was all for Krueger.

Matt Mantei was next and he struck out Sweeney.  BUT, Mantei hit Vindivich to put the tying run on board.  Pinch runner OJ Rhone took over at first for Vindivich.   Then, Diaz singled to left to load the bases.

Then, Byington singled to center and Hickman scored to cut the Foxes lead to 4-3.  Fortunately, Rhone held at third to keep the bases loaded.

Mantei regrouped to strike out Subero for the second out.  Carr flew out to Barger in center to end the game.

Answering the Trivia Question: Sal Fasano (Lansing – 2010) & Carlos Subero (Clinton – 2003-2005)
The Royals walked A-Rod intentionally after Barger doubled with two outs in the seventh inning.  The plan worked as Ibanez struck out to end the inning.
This game was scheduled to start at 1:30pm on a Sunday after the teams had played the previous night in Rockford.  The actual start time was 3:34pm.  The Official Scorer Report does not note rain, but that would be a logical conclusion to make.
