1994 Foxes Home Game #16 – May 20

The original scoresheets and boxscores from home games of the first half of the 1994 Foxes season. This was the time of Alex Rodriguez, Raul Ibanez, and many other future major league ball players.

Rattler Radio will look back at each of these games from 1994 between now and Opening Day, 2013. Enjoy.

Tim Harikkala would set down the Silver Hawks in order in the first, second, and third innings.

Oh, look! It’s Chad Dunavan with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the third.  Second homer in as many days for Dunavan and the Foxes are up 1-0.

Harikkala got the first two outs of the fourth, but issued a walk to Frank Menechino before getting Julio Vinas to fly out to end the inning.

The Foxes struck again in the bottom of the fourth.  Alex Rodriguez singled and went to second on an errant pickoff attempt.  Raul Ibanez singled to center to drive in A-Rod.  Later in the inning, a two-out single by Alex Sutherland knocked in Ibanez from second base and Appleton was up 3-0.

Harikkala walked Greg Norton to start the fifth inning.  Norton stole second and scored on a single by Bob Mumma.  The single by Mumma was the first hit of the game off Harikkala.  Mumma also wound up at second on the throw to the plate.  That didn’t help him.  Harikkala picked Mumma off second for the first out of the inning and retired the next two batters to get  out of the fifth with a 3-1 lead.

After a 1-2-3 sixth, Harikkala worked around one out singles by Vinas and Norton in the seventh to keep the lead at two runs.  He worked a 1-2-3 eighth and turned the game over to Matt Mantei to start the ninth.

Before getting to the top of the ninth, a quick retrospective of the Foxes offense after the fourth inning:

  • Guevara walked with two outs in the fifth
  • Sutherland singles with two outs in the sixth
  • Barger reached on an error and Scott Smith was hit by a pitch in the seventh
  • Brian Wallace singled with two outs in the eighth

Got it?  Good.

Mantei allowed a single to Jason Evans to start the top of the ninth.  But, Menenchino grounded into a force out at second base.  Vinas popped out to Wallace in foul territory at third.  Norton flew out to Barger in center and the Foxes won their second straight home game.

MANTEI SAVES!

This game started at 7:05pm and ended at 9:06pm.  A very snappy 2:01 for the time of game.

Andy McCormack was the second straight South Bend starting pitcher to go deep in a game, but lose.  He went seven innings, allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out eight Foxes, but took the loss.

The Foxes are 10-6 through their first sixteen home games of the 1994 season after this win over the Hawks.

Back with home game #17 on Friday with a starting pitching matchup of Ryan Franklin for the Foxes against Scott Eyre for the Silver Hawks.
