1994 Foxes Home Game #17 – May 21
A folder was found during the renovations of Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Inside this folder, an era of Appleton Professional Baseball was rediscovered. The original scoresheets and boxscores from home games of the first half of the 1994 Foxes season. This was the time of Alex Rodriguez, Raul Ibanez, and many other future major league ball players.
Rattler Radio will look back at each of these games from 1994 between now and Opening Day, 2013. Enjoy.
In Game 16, the Foxes received strong pitching from Tim Harikkala and Matt Mantei to beat the Silver Hawks. The biggest crowd of the 1994 season (to date) is on hand for Game 17 on a beautiful Saturday night at Goodland Field.

The Silver Hawks started the game with single runs in both the first and second innings. Byron Matthews doubled to start the game and he would score on a sacrifice fly by Julio Vinas. In the second, Andre Newhouse doubled to start the second, went to third on a grounder, and scored on a play at the plate when catcher Alex Sutherland dropped a throw.
The Foxes rallied in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs off Scott Eyre. Raul Ibanez singled with one out and Sutherland walked with two out. Chad Dunavan, who had homered in each of the last two home games, would double to drive in two runs to even the game.
Appleton took their first lead of the game in the fourth. Alex Rodriguez doubled to start the inning. Ibanez followed with an RBI double. Brian Wallace made it 4-2 with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Jose Cuellar singled to drive in Wallace for a 5-2 lead.
Franklin gave up a run in the top of the sixth. Greg Norton singled to start the inning. He was still at first with two outs. Then, Jimmy Reyes tripled and the Foxes were up 5-3.
Franklin went back out for the seventh inning and Matthews reached on an error by Ibanez. Matthews tried to steal second and was thrown out by Sutherland. Evans would walk, but Franklin got out of the inning by getting Menechino to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
Robert Krueger came on in relief of Franklin for the eighth and had three strikeouts and a walk. But, he ran into trouble in the ninth.
Wil Polidor reached with one out after an error on Rodriguez. Matthews singled and Evans walked and Krueger was out of the game in favor of Dean Crow.
Crow got Menechino to ground into a force play at third for the second out, but Polidor scored to cut the Foxes lead to a run.
Crow would throw a wild pitch to put the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second. He would escape by getting Vinas to ground out to third for the final out and a 5-4 Foxes victory.

Appleton won the game despite committing five errors. Rodriguez, Ibanez, Franklin, Wallace, and Sutherland were all charged with errors.
The Foxes are 11-6 in the first 17 home games of the 1994 season.
After this game, Appleton hit the road for four games at Kane County and two games at Rockford. Game #18 will be up tomorrow. It is a May 28 tilt with the Rockford Cubbies returning to Goodland Field.
