1994 Foxes Home Game #25 – June 6

A folder was found during the renovations of Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Inside this folder, an era of Appleton Professional Baseball was rediscovered. The original scoresheets and boxscores from home games of the first half of the 1994 Foxes season. This was the time of Alex Rodriguez, Raul Ibanez, and many other future major league ball players.

Rattler Radio will look back at each of these games from 1994 between now and Opening Day, 2013. Enjoy.

OPPONENT: Cedar Rapids Kernels
CONDITIONS: 83°, Clear, Windy to right

In game #24, Tim Harikkala went eight solid innings and the Foxes plated a bunch of early runs for a 6-1 win over the Kernels in the first game of the series at Goodland Field.  Ryan Franklin tries to keep it going in game #25.

The Kernels put the first two runners of the game on base with singles off Ryan Franklin.  Then, Jovino Carvajal was thrown out trying to steal third, Derrin Doty lined out to left, and Aaron Guiel grounded out to first. 

The Foxes had better luck in their half of the first inning.  Mike Barger reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on a ground out.  Manny Patel drove in his third run of the series with a single to center and it was 1-0 Appleton.
94patelFor the second game in a row, the Foxes sent seven men to the plate in the first inning, but scored just one run.

Franklin worked a perfect second inning.  He walked Carvajal with two out in the third, but Alex Sutherland threw Carvajal out trying to steal (second base this time) to end the inning.
In the fourth, Alex Rodriguez committed an error to let Juan Henderson reach at the beginning of the inning.  But, no Kernel would cross home plate in the fourth.

Appleton added to their lead in their half of the fourth.  Scott Smith was hit by a pitch with one out and he would successfully steal second base.  Jose Cuellar’s two-out single drove in Smith for a 2-0 lead.

The next batter was James Clifford and he launched a two-run homer to right-center! Foxes up 4-0.

Cedar Rapids got close in the top of the fifth. Tony Moeder singled with one out.  A double by Jason Herrick and an error by Barger in center let Moeder score.  Herrick took third on the play.  Mark Simmons cut the lead to two runs with an RBI grounder.

The Foxes would not score again after the homer by Clifford.  But, Franklin was solid again.  The Kernels brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings but the Appleton starter kept the Kernels off the board.

Franklin walked Aaron Guiel with one out in the top of the ninth.  Then, Franklin sealed the complete game victory by getting Burke to ground into a force out at second and Todd Takayosi to ground out to first for the 27th out.

Alex Rodriguez: 1-for-4, single, K

Clifford would return to Appleton in 1995 as a member of the Timber Rattlers.  He would later become the minor league strength & conditioning coach for the Seattle Mariners.

Johnny Llloyd became the second Kernel in as many days to go the distance in a loss.  Lloyd’s line: 8IP, 8H, 4R, 2BB, 4K

As noted in the post about Home Game #24, the Jamie Burke who batted fifth and played first base for the Kernels in this game would manage the Kernels in 2012.  Burke went 0-for-4 in this game against the Foxes.

The win moved the Foxes a record to 16-9 through their first 25 games at Goodland Field in 1994.
