Walkoff Wednesday (1999 Season)

It’s Walkoff Wednesday on Rattler Radio.

Today we peer back through the mists of time to 1999.  There are a couple of walkoff wild pitches, but there is also the rarest of birds…a walkoff grand slam where the home team is down by three runs…in the playoffs. (Yes, it was a Timber Rattlers victory.)

This may not be a complete list.  I did the best I could with what I had.  If you were at a game and remember something different happening, drop a line in the comments.  Or, we can wait until the end of this season and I’ll make a trip to the library to sort it all out from the microfilm files.

TIMBER RATTLERS WALKOFFS (8):

GAME WINNING PLAY: Grounder to the legs of second baseman Antonio Perez let Ruben Castillo score the winning run.

DATE: April 14
OPPONENT: Rockford Reds
BATTER: Bo Robinson
PITCHER: Jake Meyer
SCORE BEFORE WALKOFF: Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 9th
GAME WINNING PLAY: SFF-3.
SCORE AFTER WALKOFF: Timber Rattlers 5, Rockford 4
NOTE: I guess that game winning play needs some explanation.   The Rattlers had the bases loaded with one out and Bo Robinson at the plate.  First baseman James Matan made the catch in foul territory.  He flipped the ball to Meyer.  Then, Meyer started to discuss something with his catcher on the first base foul line without calling time.  Ruben Castillo tagged and took off for home.  He scored without a play and the Rattlers won.

SCORE BEFORE WALKOFF: Tied 10-10 in the bottom of the 10th
GAME WINNING PLAY: Wild Pitch scored the winning run from third base
SCORE AFTER WALKOFF: Timber Rattlers 11, Clinton 10 (10)
NOTE: According to the game story, the bases were loaded with two outs and one strike on Silvestre in the bottom of the tenth.  Minaya did a pretty emphatic fist pump after getting the second strike on Silvestre.  Then, he uncorked a wild pitch to let the winning run score.  Fist pumps. They can be your friend and they can be your enemy.

DATE: September 11
OPPONENT: Lansing Lugnuts
BATTER: Juan Silvestre
PITCHER:  Elvis Polanco
SCORE BEFORE WALKOFF: Lansing 6, Timber Rattlers 3 in the bottom of the 9th
GAME WINNING PLAY: Juan Silvestre GRAND SLAM!
SCORE AFTER WALKOFF:  Timber Rattlers 7, Lansing 6
NOTE: I was at this game.  It was Game Two of the Midwest League Semifinals.  The bottom of the ninth inning went like this:   Alan Zambrano walked.  Ramon Valera singled.  Fernando Espino struck out.  Bo Robinson walked.  Silvestre with the grand slam and a pretty cool curtain call after the game.  The victory gave the Rattlers a sweep of the Lugnuts and a spot in the Midwest League Championship. It was amazing.

NOTE: Craig Kuzmic hit a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to tie Game Three of the MWL Championship Series.  The victory kept the Rattlers, who lost the first two games of the series in Burlington, alive in the Finals.
