Baseball America released their list of the Top 20 Prospects in the Midwest League earlier this week. That list contained no Timber Rattlers.
There are 16 teams in the MWL and there is no guarantee that every team is going to have at least one player in that Top 20 list…Especially in a year where some teams are loaded – from a prospect standpoint. For example: Cedar Rapids (4), Quad Cities (3), and Kane County (3) took up half of the 20 spots on the 2013 MWL list.
JJ Cooper handled the “Why no Rattlers?” question in his chat (No link. Subscribers only) content:
Mike (Milwaukee, WI): I’m a bit surprised not to see a single TimberRattler make your list, specifically Tyrone Taylor, Orlando Arcia or Victor Roache. Was it simply a matter of not having room for them, or are their ceilings just not as high as those who did make it?
J.J. Cooper: Promised on Twitter that I would answer this one. All three were among prospects considered for the list. Taylor came the closest to making it. I’d say he was in the 21-30 range. Pretty universally scouts liked Taylor more than Roache because of a better hitting approach, better defense, plays a premium position and is more athletic. In Taylor you have a solid center fielder while Roache was considered adequate in LF. Taylor was probably the third best CF prospect in the league behind Toles but ahead of Mallex Smith. Arcia often looked overmatched this year at the plate, but scouts think he’ll improve as he matures. He has a solid swing but he’s just not strong enough to do anything with that swing yet.
The Toles that Cooper mentions is Bowling Green’s Andrew Toles, who won the MWL batting title at .326. Toles was placed at #19 on BA’s list.
Also from earlier this week, Adam McCalvy had this surprise in his twitter timeline:
#Brewers also re-signed RHP Arcenio Leon, who won’t be in big league camp, and announced RHP Austin Blaski (21st rd in 2012) has retired.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) October 1, 2013
The surprise part is that last note about 2013 Timber Rattlers All-Star Pitcher Austin Blaski retiring.
Blaski’s last game with the Timber Rattlers was on June 13 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. Blaski allowed one run on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts to pick up the win in a 2-1 defeat of the Snappers. He was a late addition to the 2013 MWL All-Star squad and was scheduled to pitch in the game at Dayton. But, he was scratched from making an appearance. That game was on June 18. Blaski had surgery one month later – July 18.
Bout to get this surgery over with so I can get on this road to recovery
— Austin Blaski (@ABlaski7) July 18, 2013
Now, he’s retired.
Good luck, Austin.
As soon as Friday’s game was called, I went looking for the nearest marquee that included a temperature. Fortunately, I didn’t have to walk far:
How cold is it? This is the darkest baseball timeline. twitter.com/CMehring/statu…

Not that it would have been any better back home. Thanks, Kevin.

No game tonight…Obviously. Two on Saturday starting at 4pm. There will be a doubleheader when the Timber Rattlers host the LumberKings in May (May 8-10).
This is eight postponements in 2013. I am going to update the Rating April since 2003 post to include 2012 and 2013. It will be up tomorrow morning.
For now, enjoy pictures of Ashford University Field and the Timber Rattlers getting their work in for the day.
Yeesh. Can they just PLAY baseball!?!?
Although, the baseball coaches of Appleton West and Menasha High Schools had a heck of an idea.

Sadly, no such deal could be worked out in Clinton tonight.
Tip of the cap to JP Cadorin for a pointer to that PC Sports tweet.
I am pretty sure that ‘Ive Got You Babe’ was the song that was playing on my clock/radio this morning.
No doubleheader today. But, this team intro video will be played again at the stadium this season…eventually.
Now, the reason you are all here. Snowy Stadium Pictures. When does Andie MacDowell show up so she and I can build a snowman?
I may talk a walk to the pedestrian bridge that crosses Highway 41 later today….I may go see ’42’ today….I may just curl up under my desk and wait for April….It is April? Could’ve fooled me.
Rained out on the second day of the home schedule….Let’s get this out of the way….
Thanks, Perry. Hopefully we won’t need you much this season. (Fingers Crossed)
It’s time you met another member of the Mehring Menagerie. Keep it brief, Brick:
And for photographic proof:
Plenty of media in attendance for the home opener and here are links to the different stories. For those of you outside the greatest state in the Union….those people in the parking lot are tailgating. It was 42 degrees:
WBAY’s Emily Matesic filed this story before the game on the renovations while Tricia Whitaker had these stories on the preparations by the players and coaching staff.
WFRV’s Bret Lemoine was at the game and had a report. You can see the text of the report at this link, but the video has been replaced by highlights of last night’s game.
NBC26 was here. I saw them. I just can’t find their stuff online right now
Tim Froberg of The Post-Crescent has this article with video of an interview with Clint Coulter. Wm. Glasheen documented the night in photographs.
If you want a little baseball mixed in with this post, here is Kyle from Brew Crew Ball with an Opening Day Notebook , Kevin from Cream City Cables with an article on Mitch Haniger and Coulter, and Alec from Brewers Rumors filed this game story.
That will do it for today. Think warm thoughts, Timber Rattlers fans!
A few odds and ends from the first full day of the Timber Rattlers in Appleton, Wisconsin.
It was Media Day today and there will be plenty of stories in various Fox Valley media to link to later tonight or sometime tomorrow.
I can share the 2013 Timber Rattlers rotation as it was announced by pitching coach David Chavarria. There will be four tandems to start the season with one stand alone starter:
THU: Tyler Wagner/Mike Strong
FRI: Damien Magnifico/Leonard Lorenzo
SAT: Brent Suter
SUN: Jorge Lopez/Ryan Gibbard
MON: Preston Gainey/Eric Semmelhack
There was a roster move yesterday. RHP Taylor Mangum – @themangral10 -has joined the Timber Rattlers. That puts the Timber Rattlers roster at 25.
Click the link below for the new roster, which has been cleaned up as far as the removal of double numbers and a few typos:
I taped the first edition of Timber Rattlers Field Pass for Time Warner Cable SportsChannel after Media Day. Manager Matt Erickson and team president Rob Zerjav are the guests. JP Cadorin will have a piece on Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris that he taped in Arizona earlier in March.
The team did manage to get outside after media day. A quick stretch on the concourse and a quick game of catch in the parking lot. Field is still a little soft.
It can start warming up any day now. Any. Day. Now.
Here you go. Your 2013 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers!

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers have held a weekly promotion known as Brewers Sunday since 2009. Brewers Sunday is the day on which the Timber Rattlers wear a jersey based on the Milwaukee Brewers for their home games.
Those game worn jerseys are auctioned off for charity after the final Sunday home game of the season.
In the past, the team has worn jerseys based on Brewers jerseys from 1975, 1982, 2009, and 2012. This year’s look turned out great!
The 2013 Timber Rattlers Brewers Sunday jerseys should be familiar to Brewers fans of a certain vintage:
There are 12 Sunday home games on the schedule this season:
April 14, 21, 28
June 2, 9, 23, 30
July 14, 28
August 4, 25
