Rattlers manager Matt Erickson is managing the combined Brewers/Mariners Advanced Instructional League team in Arizona.  Matt has been reporting back to Rattler Radio with how things are going down there during the games.

He did not have a report on Thursday’s 7-6 win over the Royals/Rangers, but a boxscore has been sent out via email.

Manager’s report from Advanced Instructional League (#5)

Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson checks in from Arizona with notes about the Advanced Instructional League games.  This update is from Wednesday’s game, a 9-0 loss to the Rangers/Royals and it features a Tyler Thornburg appearance.

  • The Brewers/Mariners took one on the chin as the Rangers/Royals pitched a shutout, while belting out 14 hits for the 9-0 win.
  • The Mariners pitching gave up 5 runs in the first 3 innings.
  • The Brewers staff took the ball in the 6th.
  • [Tyler] Thornburg struck out two batters in a scoreless 6th, gave up 2 runs in the 7th, and got another zero in the 8th by inducing a double play and a pop up.
  • [Alan] Williams pitched the 9th and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, 1 bb, and 1 SO.
  • Defensive report:
  • [TJ] Mittelstaedt made a nice catch on a line drive at 3b.
  • [Nick] Shaw had a couple routine plays at 2b.
  • [Yadiel] Rivera made two nice plays
  • A back hand play 6-3
  • And started a web gem DP by coming in on a chopper and delivering a perfect feed to Shaw for the 6-4-3.
  • Offensive report: No runs. Collected just 3 hits.
  • Rivera had two hard hit singles 2/3.
  • Shaw had a line drive single to LF.
  • Rivera and Mittelstaedt were both caught stealing 2b on first movement from the LHP.

Manager’s report from Advanced Instructional League (#4)

Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson checks in from Arizona with the Advanced Instructional League action from Tuesday.

In the game, the team of Brewers/Mariners prospects defeated a team of Reds/Indians 7-5.  To the bulletpoints!

  • The offense was a little slow getting started
  • 1 run on 2 hits thru 6 innings.
  • However, a solo HR in the 7th and a 5 run 8th helped the Brewers/Mariners get a come from behind win today in Goodyear, AZ
  • In the 5th, Morris leadoff the inning with a single, advanced to 2b on a HBP, went to 3b on a Mittelstaedt walk, and scored on a sac fly to cut into a 3-1 lead.
  • The late game charge started with a solo HR in the 7th, and was capped off with a 5 run 8th inning.
  • Rivera walked and scored on a bases clearing double.
  • Morris also added a 2 out RBI single for the Brewers in the inning.
  • Defensive report:
  • The Mariners pitching staff allowed 5 runs on 10 hits.
  • Walla misplayed a single in RF that allowed an extra base.
  • However, he made a great catch on a sinking line drive with a runner at 3b that saved a run.
  • Vucinich made a sweet play bare handing a slow roller for a 5-3.
  • Mittelstaedt made a nice power feed to 2nd base to start a 4-6-3 DP that ended the ballgame.

Manager’s report from Advanced Instructional League (#3)

Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson checks in from Arizona with a report on Monday’s game of the Advanced Instructional League.   The word ambush comes up very early in the write up in the game between the Brewers/Mariners prospects and the White Sox/Dodgers prospects*.

  • The AIL Brewer’s pitching staff was ambushed for 16 runs on 17 hits today.
  • The White Sox/Dodgers scored runs in each of the first 6 innings including an 8 run 2nd, and cruised to the 16-4 win.
  • Defensive report:
  • We turned 2 DP’s. Vucinich caught a line drive and threw to 1b to double up a runner L5-3.
  • Rivera also started a 6-4-3 DP.
  • Morris made a nice catch along the fence in foul territory F3.
  • Offensive report:
  • After a leadoff single in the 1st, Morris singled to LCF to move runners to 1b and 2b.
  • The lead runner scored on a RBI double for the first run of the game.
  • Morris struck again in the 4th with a leadoff single and scored on a 2 run inside the park HR.
  • In the 7th, Vucinich hit a 1 out double, moved to 2b on a dirt ball read, and scored on a RBI groundout from Walla for a 15-4 final.

Manager’s report from Advanced Instructional League (#2)

Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson checks in from Arizona with a report on the second game of the Advanced Instructional League.  Game two was a 2-0 win for Erickson’s charges, a combination of prospects from the Brewers and Mariners system.

As you will see, Thursday was a day for the Mariners pitchers, so the only updates provided are about the Brewers farmhands too play in the game.


  • The Mariner pitching staff shut down the Reds/Indians with 7 shutout innings
  • Defensive report:
  • All routine plays were made today with no errors.
  • Shaw made a leaping catch at 2b.
  • Offensive report:
  • In the 4th, leadoff hitter was HBP, advanced to 2b on a single by Mittelstaedt, and scored on an RBI single for a 1-0 lead
  • Mittelstaedt made a nice read tagging from 2b to 3b on fly ball to RCF with no out.
  • In the 6th, Rivera led off with a single, went 1b to 3b on E1 pickoff attempt, and scored on an RBI double from Shaw for the 2-0 final.
  • The Brewers picked up 3 of the 4 hits in today’s game.

Manager’s report from Advanced Instructional League (#1)

Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson is managing a combination of Brewers and Mariners minor league players in Arizona during the Advanced Instructional Leagues.  He has agreed to send in reports on how the Brewers minor leaguers are playing in those games. I’ll be posting those reports to the blog.

Here is his report on the first game of their season, a 6-0 win (in 7 innings) over a combination of Rangers/Royals prospects*:

  • Won 6-0 behind solid pitching and defense today.
  •  Brewer’s pitchers go a scoreless 4 IP (Jungmann, Arnett, Lintz, Medlen).
  • Defensive report:
  • Walla had an OF assist throwing out a runner at 2b (9-6).
  • Shaw made a nice power feed to 2b for DP with runner stealing on pitch (4-6-3).
  • Vucinich made a nice play on a slow roller for 5-3.
  • Berberet gunned down a runner attempting to steal 2b with a 1.89
  • Offensive report:
  • In the 3rd Shaw singled to CF and scored from 1b on a 2 run double.
  • Berberet added a 2 out RBI single for 3-0 lead.
  • In the 6th, Walla led off with a double, moved to 3b on a good read [on a] 6-3 [groundout], and scored on a balk from the pitcher to make the score 5-0.
  • In the 7th, Mittelstaedt hit an RBI single to RF for the 6-0 final.
