Rattler Alumni Report – Winter League Games through November 17, 2013

The Arizona Fall League finished its regular season and held its Championship Game.  The Surprise Saguaros – with the assistance of some Timber Rattlers players – won the pennant with a 2-0 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox.

AFL Champions

Surprise had defeated Mesa, 2-0, at Scottsdale Stadium, winning the franchise’s first championship since 1995. But other than center fielder Tyler Naquin’s spontaneous decision to take the official championship picture wearing Jorge Alfaro’s catcher’s mask, the celebration was rather low key. There was some Chipotle, but no trophy — or Champagne — waiting for the Saguaros in the clubhouse.

But none of it mattered to them.

Click that link up top to see David Goforth (’12) get the final out with a called third strike…and also to see Kevin Shackelford get a running start to wind up on top of the victory scrum.  It’s getting to be his signature finishing move.  Like here after the Rattlers beat Clinton in the Western Division Finals back in 2012.

Here’s a better look at the comparison:

Mitch Haniger: 0-for-3

On the mound for the Sox, Craig Anderson was back to his 2012-13 ABL Pitcher of the Year best, throwing seven strong innings of one-run baseball. Ando scattered five hits, walked two and struck out six on his way to his first win of the season.

Jason Rogers had this story on the Brewers website after a 3-for-4 game last week:

“Just by taking it day by day,” Rogers said. “I know what I can do. I’ve got to work harder because I was a 32nd-round pick. But I know I can play with all these guys.”

Rogers had another multihit game Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with a double in Surprise’s 4-2 victory against Glendale at Surprise Stadium. The Saguaros’ second win in as many days against the Desert Dogs lowered their magic number to clinch the West Division to four with eight games to play.

Rogers’ successful fall is just a continuation of what he started in Hunstville. He hit .270 with a .468 slugging percentage and more than doubled his career home run total.

“The biggest thing was getting in better shape this year, just staying healthy,” Rogers said. “I’ve had problems with that in the past.”

Rattler Alumni Report – Winter League Games through November 3, 2013

Since last week, the World Series ended while the Winter Leagues in Puerto Rico and Australia started.  Plus, Mitch Haniger was scouted and David Goforth pitched in the Arizona Fall League “Fall Stars” game.

Former Timber Rattler David Ortiz was named the World Series MVP.

Who else could it be?

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was named MVP of the 2013 World Series Wednesday night following Boston’s 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6.

“This is for you, Boston,” Ortiz said holding the trophy above his head. “You deserve it.”

Ortiz made his case for the award early and often during the series, posting a .688 average (11 for 16) with two home runs, six RBIs, and eight walks. Over one stretch, Ortiz reached base in nine consecutive at bats.

“His performance both on and off the field is something that we’re all very proud of,” said Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

Ortiz’s totals could have been even greater had he not been robbed of a grand slam in the second inning of Game 1. Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran took away a home run against the bullpen, leaving Ortiz to settle for a sacrifice fly. He would homer later in the game, and again in Game 2.

MLB PLAYOFFS:

David Ortiz:
ALDS v. TB: 4 games; 5-for-13, 2HR, 3RBI, 5 BBs
ALCS v. DET: 6 games; 2-for-22, HR, 4 RBI
WS v. STL: 6 games; 11-for-16, 2HR, 6RBI, 8 BBs; .688/.760/1.188

Bernie Pleskoff notes that Haniger is “on the fast track”.

I have been watching Haniger regularly in the Arizona Fall League. He was voted the Co-Player of the Week following the first week of play. He and Cubs infielder Kris Bryant had outstanding offensive starts to the season.

Haniger has a wide stance at the plate. His bat is held high, and his hands get through the ball with enough quickness to gain backspin and distance.

At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Haniger has excellent proportion to his frame.

Patience and maturity are major components of Haniger’s offensive game. He sees lots of pitches. He knows how to take a walk. He can also foul off pitches, deepening the workload of the pitcher while selecting the right pitch to hit.

When he does swing, he makes good contact.

I noted how Goforth did in the AFL All-Stars Game in this tweet:

Mitch Haniger is playing really well to start the Arizona Fall League:

While Mitch Haniger, the Brewers’ No. 12 prospect, may be just 10 games into the Arizona Fall League season, he’s already made his presence felt in the middle of Surprise’s lineup.

That was never more obvious than in Saturday’s 7-0 win over Glendale. Haniger, who was recently honored as Co-Player of the Week, belted a three-run shot in the top of the first inning, allowing Surprise to cruise to an easy victory.

What made the center fielder’s at-bat against starter Trevor May even more impressive was his ability to battle back from an 0-2 hole.

“I was really able to see all of the pitches he had in that at-bat and really work the count before hitting the home run,” said Haniger.

In just 33 at-bats so far this season, he is hitting .394 with two home runs and 12 RBIs, a staggering pace for this early in the season.

“I’m feeling really good about how I’m swinging the bat right now. Any time you are in this zone, you see the ball better,” Haniger said. “I know for me, everything seems slower.”
