Tater Tuesday – Victor Roache (2013)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

This will be the last Tater Tuesday of the offseason. I may bring it back in one form or another during the season. But, for now, I will turn the feature over to Victor Roache.

Victor Roache 2013

Roache tied the single season franchise record for home runs with 22 in 2013. Let’s walk down memory lane.

Tater Tuesday – Nick Ramirez (2012)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Nick Ramierz 2012
Nick Ramirez hit three home runs in just over a month with the Timber Rattlers in 2011.  He looked like a sure thing for Wisconsin’s opening night lineup as the first baseman in 2012.  But, he had a late start to his 2012 season due to a broken hamate bone late in spring training of that year.  He healed and when he got the Midwest League in mid-May, it was time to start hitting home runs.

Tater Tuesday – Brock Kjeldgaard (2009)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

The 2009 season was the first season Wisconsin was an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.  That was also the first season a Brewers farmhand took a run at the franchise record for home runs in a single season.

BROCK SMASH!

Brock Kjeldgaard, the Canadian first baseman on the 2009 Rattlers, led the team in homers with 20 and fell just shy of tying the old record of 21.  But, on distance alone and on the number of times I thought, “BROCK SMASH!!” after most of those homers by Kjeldgaard it was a fun season.

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Joe Dunigan was the 5th round pick of the Seattle Mariners in 2007.  He spent all of 2008 with the Timber Rattlers. Dunigan led the team in homers with 14 during the final season Wisconsin was affiliated with Seattle.

His path to 14 home runs wasn’t easy, but once he got in the groove, it was something to see.

It was a tale of two halves for Dunigan.  He hit .212 with three homers and 16 RBI in the first half.  He launched 11 homers with 42 RBI and a .258 average.

Dunigan’s home/road splits for average, homers, and RBI were almost identical.  In 59 home games he hit .239 with seven homers and drove in 29 runs.  In 60 road games, he hit .240 with seven homers and drove in 29 runs.

Dunigan has hit 110 home runs in his professional career.  He hit 30 in 2009 at High Desert in the California League.

He was with Tacoma at Triple-A to start the 2013 season, but was hit in the face with a pitch on April 18.  Dunigan was interviewed by Chris Harris of the Jackson Generals on August 1 of last year.  You can see the interview at this post.

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Tater Tuesday has already looked at the team leader in home runs from the 2005 season with Mike Wilson’s entry.  But, another look at 2005 is worth it this week for left-handed slugger Marshall Hubbard’s 17 homers.

Note: If you scan the type of homers that Hubbard hit in 2005, you’ll notice that he only hit three solo home runs.

If you ever needed proof as to how unfriendly Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium is to left-handed power hitters, I give you Marshall Hubbard’s 2005 season.

Hubbard hit 17 homers for the Timber Rattlers that season.  He had 15 on the road and just two at home.

Let’s take a look at his home/road splits for that season.

Home: 56 Games, 191 At Bats; .251/.368/.351; 2 HR, 26RBI
Road: 54 Games, 200 At Bats; .340/.405/.635; 15 HR, 51RBI

That is an odd split and it is unfortunate because Hub had a top five Timber Rattlers walk-up song of All-Time!  Hub is a Real American! Fights for the rights of every man!

Tater Tuesday – Henry Aaron (1975-1976)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

This week, we step away from Timber Rattlers home runs to celebrate an important date for fans of the home run.

Henry Louis Aaron was born on February 5, 1934.  Tomorrow is his 80th birthday.  To honor Hammerin’ Hank, Tater Tuesday looks at the home runs he hit with the Milwaukee Brewers during the 1975 and 1976 seasons.

Tater Tuesday – Adam Jones (2004)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

This week, we will do the double to tie this feature in with Top Five Tuesday on the main website.  Plus, we will talk about a player who will be featured in the Timber Rattlers 2014 Bobblehead Series.

That player is Adam Jones.  He’s an All-Star centerfielder with the Baltimore Orioles now.  But, ten years ago, he was just over two months away from his Midwest League debut as the shortstop of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Here's Adam Jones at bat as a Timber Rattler in 2004.

Here’s Adam Jones at bat as a Timber Rattler in 2004.

Jones hit .267 over 130 games during the 2004 with the Rattlers.  He led the team in hits (136) and RBI (72).  Jones finished the year with 11 home runs, which was good for third on the team – behind Wladimir Balentien (15) and Chris Colton (12).

Tater Tuesday – Jon Nelson (2003)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Jon Nelson finished second on the team in home runs during the 2003 season.  But, some of the home runs that he hit were the furthest and hardest hit homers in Timber Rattlers history.

Jon Nelson

Jon Nelson

Nelson ended the season with 16 regular season homers, a 38 doubles, 91 RBI, and 71 runs scored.  He also struck out 168 times, but those home runs went a long way….because Jon Nelson was straight up the strongest guy I have ever seen play for the Rattlers.
