Tater Tuesday – Sean Peless (2002)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Sean Peless led the Rattlers in homers in 2002. He also hit the only walkoff home run for the team that season.

Sean Peless led the Rattlers in homers in 2002. He also hit the only walkoff home run for the team that season.

Sean Peless was the Opening Night first baseman for the Timber Rattlers.  He had three multi-homer games, hit a walkoff home run, and led the team in homers during the 2002 season.

I do not have full details on his first two-homers, hit during an 8-5 win over the Burlington Bees during the second game of a doubleheader on April 11.   My hockey duties had me driving into Burlington from a playoff series in that night.

John Castellano led the Timber Rattlers in several offensive categories in 2001.

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

John Castellano joined the Seattle Mariners organization from the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League.  He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 66th round of the 1997 draft.

Castellano was not on the opening day roster of the Timber Rattlers in 2001, but it didn’t take him long to join the team as he played his first game as a Rattler on April 19.  His first appearance was a pinch-hit, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth.

He would lead the team in average (.334), doubles (34), RBI (81), and – as you might expect since he is featured on Tater Tuesday – home runs (14).

The first three homers have information missing due to me being gone for my announcing job with the Green Bay Gamblers.

Shawn McCorkle and Leone went back-to-back with home runs on June 30.

Leone and McCorkle also accounted for the only two runs July 2 game against Kane County.  Both hit solo homers off Josh Beckett in a 2-0 win.  JJ Putz tossed a complete game shutout for the Timber Rattlers in that game.

McCorkle hit eleven of his seventeen regular season homers on the road.  He started the season in the lower part of the order before moving up into the #3 spot in the lineup for the majority of the season.

McCorkle, a 7th round pick in 1998 out of Mount Clair State, was a midseason All-Star.  He was also named the MWL’s Postseason All-Star First Baseman.  McCorkle played the 2001 season for San Bernardino, Seattle’s California League affiliate, but was let go before the 2002 season started.

Tater Tuesday – Juan Silvestre (1999)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

This week, we take a look at the 1999 season of Juan Silvestre.  That was his second season as a Timber Rattler.  It was also the season he hit 21 home runs to set the single season record for the franchise.  On top of those regular season homers, Silvestre hit five taters in the playoffs.

Silvestre is the only Rattler to have TWO walkoff home runs.

Silvestre hit 21 homers in the regular season and five in the playoffs.

If you look at the dates, you will notice that Silvestre went on home run binges.   He had six games with two home runs.  There was also a stretch of three straight games (June 15-18) where he hit five long balls.

Unfortunately, most of the details have been lost to time…like homers in the rain.  What we have, we will share.

Tater Tuesday – Mike Wilson (2005)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Mike Wilson was entering his fourth season of professional baseball in 2005.  Wilson, a big-time linebacker recruit for the University of Oklahoma, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2nd round of the 2001 draft.  He was still finding his way at the game of baseball.  But, when he figured it out, Wilson had one of the best power hitting seasons – and postseasons in Timber Rattlers season.

Mike Wilson hit 19 taters in the regular season and three in the postseason during 2005.

Tater Tuesday – David Ortiz (1996)

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player.

Back in 1996, the Timber Rattlers were in their second season of existence.  They had a slugging first baseman out of the Dominican Republic by the name of David Arias.  That player is now known as David Ortiz.

David Ortiz led the Rattlers in most of the offensive categories in 1996.

David Ortiz led the Rattlers in most of the offensive categories in 1996.

He set the original single season home run mark for the team by launching 18 during that campaign.  This week, we take a look at all of his homers during that season for the Timber Rattlers.

Unfortunately, the complete details for each homer are not available.  But, we do have the dates of each of his home runs.  If you can supply any of the missing details, feel free to drop a line in the comments.

So, let’s get started.

NOTES:
Ortiz had two home run droughts of almost a month (July 7 to August 4 & August 6 to September 1) in the second half of the season.

The Timber Rattlers played ten playoff games in 1996.  Ortiz did not homer in any of those playoff games.

That home run on June 8 against Kane County was the first walkoff home run in Timber Rattlers history.

Ortiz held the single season home run record for the franchise until Juan Silvestre hit 21 in the 1999 regular season.

2012 Postseason Homers

Tater Tuesday – 2012 Postseason Homers

Welcome to Tater Tuesday on the blog. Each week I’ll take a look at home runs or – as the Great George Scott called them – taters. Usually, this will be home runs by a Timber Rattlers player….But, not this week.

Since the World Series starts tomorrow with Game One at Fenway Park between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, this week we will take a look at the home runs hit by the Timber Rattlers during their 2012 postseason.

Home or Away: Home
Opposing Pitcher: Drew Granier
Inning: Bottom of the 4th
Outs: 1
Score Before Homer: Wisconsin 1, Burlington 0

Note: Ramirez followed McMahan’s homer with one of his own.

HR #3
Timber Rattler: Yadiel Rivera
Date: September 8
Opponent: Clinton LumberKings
Home or Away: Away
Opposing Pitcher: Rusty Shellhorn
Inning: Top of the 4th
Outs: 1
Score Before Homer: Clinton 1, Wisconsin 0
Type: 3-run
Score After Homer: Wisconsin 3, Clinton 1
Note: Game one of the Western Division Finals

HR #4
Timber Rattler: Mike Garza
Date: September 8
Opponent: Clinton LumberKings
Home or Away: Away
Opposing Pitcher: Rusty Shellhorn
Inning: Top of the 4th
Outs: 1
Score Before Homer: Wisconsin 3, Clinton 1
Type: Solo
Score After Homer: Wisconsin 4, Clinton 1
Note: Garza and Rivera went back-to-back to put the Rattlers in front to stay in this game.

HR #5
Timber Rattler: Nick Ramirez
Date: September 9
Opponent: Clinton LumberKings
Home or Away: Home
Opposing Pitcher: Seon-Gi Kim
Inning: Bottom of the 1st
Outs: 2
Score Before Homer: Clinton 2, Wisconsin 0
Type: 2-run
Score After Homer: Wisconsin 2, Clinton 2
Note: Home Run #2 for Ramirez and it tied Game two of the Western Finals 2-2.

HR #6
Timber Rattler: Nick Ramirez
Date: September 13
Opponent: Fort Wayne TinCaps
Home or Away: Home
Opposing Pitcher: Colin Rea
Inning: Bottom of the 4th
Outs: 2
Score Before Homer: Fort Wayne 1, Wisconsin 0
Type: Solo
Score After Homer: Wisconsin 1, Fort Wayne 1
Note: The Rattlers would lose Game Two of the Championship Series 5-1.  This is the only post season game in which they homered that Wisconsin lost.

HR #7
Timber Rattler: Nick Ramirez
Date: September 15
Opponent: Fort Wayne TinCaps
Home or Away: Away
Opposing Pitcher: Frank Garces
Inning: Top of the 4th
Outs: 0
Score Before Homer: Fort Wayne 3, Wisconsin 0
Type: Solo
Score After Homer: Fort Wayne 3, Wisconsin 1
Note: This was a leadoff homer in the 4th inning for Ramirez.  This was also his fourth home run of the 2012 postseason.

HR #8
Timber Rattler: Brandon Macias
Date: September 15
Opponent: Fort Wayne TinCaps
Home or Away: Away
Opposing Pitcher: Cody Hebner
Inning: Top of the 4th
Outs: 2
Score Before Homer: Fort Wayne 3, Wisconsin 2
Type: 3-run
Score After Homer: Wisconsin 5, Fort Wayne 3
Note: In my mind, this was the biggest home run of that post season for the Rattlers.  Hebner had just entered the game as a reliever, Macias crushed this tater, and the Rattlers went on to win Game Three 10-8.

HR #9
Timber Rattler: Max Walla
Date: September 16
Opponent: Fort Wayne TinCaps
Home or Away: Away
Opposing Pitcher: James Needy
Inning: Top of the 2nd
Outs: 2
Score Before Homer: Wisconsin 1, Fort Wayne 0
Type: Solo
Score After Homer: Wisconsin 2, Fort Wayne 0
Note: Speaking of “crushed”…Walla’s homer was way out to right field and the Rattlers had the lead.  Fort Wayne did come back to tie the game, but Wisconsin won Game Four on a two-run double by Ramirez in the seventh inning and the Wisconsin held on for the 4-2 win to clinch the pennant.

NOTE:
The Timber Rattlers pitching staff only allowed four homers in 81 innings pitched during that postseason run.
